Vata is comprised of ether and air. Ether or space can be either seen as that which brings the other elements into the being, the picture bigger, OR it can feel like a void, depending on your well being both in body and mind. And as we say in Ayurveda, you only know the doshas exist when they present as symptoms, otherwise they are busy doing their jobs in the body via homeostasis.
So when Vata feels particularly vulnerable it may want to shut itself away from others. Sometimes the reason is that the relationship with others may be one that involves the others taking more from you than you can give, and therefore it is a natural reaction to shut down. There is also the factor of energy. Vata loses energy quickly and finds itself needing the space to recuperate itself.
But there is a fine line - between being conscious enough to understand the space created is for building (like a supported cleanse or conscious self care) versus shutting down life, or prana, which can be a dangerous space if the void feels to large and encompassing.
In this case it is important to be around others as part of the medicine Vata needs to heal. Walking around cities, going to the movies, walking in a park, taking a yoga class, being around animals. These are some ideas of how to be amongst others without the depleting energy of engagement.
And I really feel like angels are around us all the time - in times like this, a smile or small random gesture like opening the door can be just the ticket to turn it all around and bring back the vitality to move forward.
