The Avocado through the eyes of Ayurveda

Perhaps my favourite fruit. I like it so much I eat it daily.  It grounds me immediately and I feel a sense of contentment. So would the Avocado be good for everyone?

Ayurveda like to see food as a mix of qualities which then condense into tastes. Avocados are seen as heavy, oily,cool and soft. We have this idea that ALL fruit and veggies must be good for you.  But if you are feeling mucousy and lethargic and dull and your joints feel stuck and thick then eating food with the qualities of heavy would be counter intuitive.

Avocados are cool and heavy and can be difficult to digest.  It's always advisable to add some salt and pepper to enliven it, adding lemon juice and coriander will do the same.  These ingredients counteract the heavy qualities of the avocado to assist with digestion.

So, as always, check on yourself -  what qualities you can handle, what your digestion is like at the moment and how you feel afterwards. There is no good or bad anything just right time, right place, right digestion.
